Hermann tortoises are a very lovable addition to any family, and our little 2 1/2 year old guy is no different. If we had the means, we’d love to keep him but sadly we don’t. His food is cheap, half a shell size of kale + a side of one of the following; chopped slice of apple, bell pepper, or carrots. That’s his favorites. But you can of course try giving him new things that are safe for him to eat. His bedding costs like $9 at PetSmart. A new heating bulb costs about $12 or $32 for a high end ceramic heat emitter. So, overall not very expensive upkeep for a reptile.
The reason that we are hoping to re-home him is simply because we don’t have the room to keep him. Currently he is in a 50 gallon terrarium which would be okay if he could get out and roam our house. However, we live in a tiny place and our dog (who we adopted before the tortoise so we feel he gets first priority to the home) seems to think the little guy might be a chew toy. Thankfully we realized that long before he was able to get to the little fella.
We’ve set the price so cheaply for him and all of his stuff(terrarium, heat light+ceramic bulb, food and water dish, calcium, log cave, temperature gage) because we are hoping that whoever buys him saves the rest of the money they expected to spend on their new friend and put it towards setting up a tortoise table for this little guy. Something that would give him a little more room to roam. He’s a sweetie and we love him very much so we only want a good home for him with someone who will take his care seriously.
