Civil Asset Forfeiture is Legalized Robbery
by Mike Baker
Civil Asset Forfeiture is the process through which police departments are encouraged to confiscate property, goods, or cash from citizens who are merely suspected to have been involved in a crime.

This practice was once relegated to drug-related crimes only, but has since been expanded by governments throughout our nation to include almost any kind of infraction that a citizen might be accused of. Property seizure have even occurred in jaywalking cases.

Even simple motor vehicle infractions can result in your property being seized by the police; and when it is confiscated, you'll have little recourse, because the matter will not be adjudicated in a Court of Law, but by a government administrative body, which will ignore your rights under the Constitution, which were meant to protect your property from unlawful seizure.

In fact, you don't even need to be charged with a crime for police to seize your property, and in most U.S. jurisdictions, the police departments that do the seizing get to keep the proceeds, creating an obvious conflict of interest. One could rightly cause this injustice Policing for Profit.
