The Source of Natural Rights
by Mike Baker
If you don't believe your natural rights are a gift from God, then where do you believe they come from? From your humanity? From nature, you think? Nature makes no such gift to mankind. In fact, the laws of nature dictate only one thing; that the strong shall prey upon the weak. End of story. If you believe that your rights come to you from government, then essentially, what you're saying is that your rights come to you as gifts from another human being, or a group of human beings, calling themselves a "government." Our rights to life, liberty, and property pre-date the existence of any government on earth, as does our right to defend those rights by keeping and bearing arms. Natural rights, such as the right of self-preservation are unalienable, and cannot be justly taken from us, or interfered with by any government, because they are gifts from God. Essentially, if you don't believe that your rights come from a divine source, then you don't really have any rights at all. All you have is a temporary list of privileges.
